7 common questions about hypopressives

Updated: 5 days ago

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about hypopressives lately, so, I thought I’d take a moment to answer 7 common questions I get about the technique. If you’ve been curious about how it can help with things like prolapse or incontinence and whether it’s right for you, keep reading!

1. What exactly is hypopressives?

Hypopressives is a breathwork and movement technique developed in the 1980s. It focuses on lateral breathing and includes a vacuum breath that helps lift and strengthen the pelvic floor. We do hypopressives in a variety of different poses to challenge the body. It’s a low-impact technique that helps target symptoms like leaking and that bulgy, heavy feeling that often comes with prolapse.

2. How does it help my pelvic floor?

Hypopressives works by reducing pressure in the pelvic floor and increasing the resting tone. The lateral breathing helps increase the synergy between the diaphragm and pelvic floor, helping the whole core unit function more optimally.

3. Do I need to be super fit to start?

Not at all! And one of the benefits of hypopressives is that it actually helps to build fitness, so it’s win win! By teaching 1:1, I can work at your pace and make sure you’re comfortable with the progressions.

4. How often should I practice?

Consistency is key! Aim for 15 mins, 5/6 times a week. It’s key to practice hypopressives in a variety of different poses to really feel the benefits.

5. What if I’m pregnant?

The good news is you can still practice the breathing and poses in pregnancy, you just exclude the breath hold and the vacuum breath

6. Can I learn hypopressives online?

Yes, you can! Whilst I teach some women in Sydney in person, most of the women I work with are based thousands of kilometres away. The most important thing if you’re new to it, is learning one-on-one to help you nail the technique.

7. How long does it take to see improvements?

You’re highly likely to see improvements within 4-6 weeks of practicing. Imagine that, in just a few short weeks your symptoms could have drastically reduced!
